6th INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM "LITERATURE. Children. TIME"

September, 9th – 13th, 2015
PROGECT «All of Ukraine Reads to Kids»

Spesial guest:

Irena Kozhminska, President of the Foundation "All of Poland reads to kids" with the support of the Polish Institute in Kyiv

Liliia Ovdiichuk 6th International Symposium “Literature. Children. Time”: New Format

This year the 6th International Symposium “Literature. Children. Time” had started in parallel with the event that plays a special role in the cultural and artistic life of Lviv. We are talking about the 22nd Forum of Publishers and Readers what, as a kind of litmus, examines the works of writers for authenticity. Thus all activities of the URCCYL took place in this combination of the Symposium and the Forum. Because all members of the URCCYL are the authors of the books presented at the Forum or their readers.

The opening, round tables, scientific conference, Symposium closing were going on in time (September, 9th-12th, 2015) and in space, moving from “Dzyga” (Virmenska Str.) to Western Scientific Center NASU (Mateika Str.) across the Kopernika Str.

During the round table “Current issues of the publication and promotion of children’s and teenagers’ books in Ukraine” and “All of Ukraine Reads to Kids – All of Poland Reads to Kids”: ways of implementation and association of the projects. Prospects for cooperation” participants shared their experience of holding of various forms of attracting children to reading: authors’, creative, multilingual readings, readings on television, reading and discussion of books in the “Kolo”, etc. In details, these forms are the stage reading “Commedia del pARTa”, coordinator – Olha Dovhan-Levitska according to the methodology by Martina Ducqué, expert of the “Stiftung Lesen” from Germany; festival of mini-libraries under the open sky in the framework of the festival “Franko. Mission” (2013) in collaboration with the art association “Dzyga” in Popovychi and Nahuievychi; a special TV show “Let’s read together!” with Halyna Malyk on the Transcarpathian TV Tisa-1; “Family Reading Club” with Iryna Kontsevych (the head of the “European Home”, Lviv); literary reading “Around the Book” – reading and discussion of the teenagers’ favorite books in the bookstore “Є” (coordinator – Myroslav Vovk, NSOU “Plast”); the presentation of the Project with the participation of Marina Kotenko and Iryna Matsko on the TV show “Mother’s school” in Ternopil. The speech of Alla Sokolovska from Berezhany Museum of Local Lore produced very positive and emotional reaction, because the speaker presented the photo collection of different conducted forms of readings.

Consequently, the component of the Symposium, previously concentrated in the literary festival for children “Dyvokray”, was transformed into a comprehensive project “All of Ukraine Reads to Kids”. What is more, the creative showed by members of the URCCYL has surpassed all expectations. So librarians, teachers, parents, in a word, “unindifferent hundred” of those who want children to grow up as real Ukrainians joined to the work. It is especially important in the Eastern Ukraine. Oksana Proselkova, the initiator of the Summer and Winter readings in Kramatorsk, talked about it. All intellectual and creative Ukraine could learn about the work of the Eastern Ukraine branch of the URCCYL from the interview with Oksana Proselkova published in “Literary Ukraine” (August, 20th, 2015).

However, the participants of the round table couldn’t bypass some problems, because such important for Ukraine and for its European future Project has not received government support. It paves its way thanks to enthusiasm of a remarkable and unindifferent people in the regions. It should be noted that certain participants of the Symposium had to be simultaneously in two important areas: the Forum, where the presentation of books (Halyna Malyk, Oleksandr Havrosh, Natalia Trokhym, Iryna Matsko) or interview (Oksana Proselkova) took place, and at Mateika Str., 4.

The 3d “scientific” day quite corresponded with its status as researchers of children’s literature from different regions of Ukraine gathered: Uliana Baran (Lviv), Vitalina Kyzylova (Luhansk – Starobilsk), Larysa Lebedivna (Kyiv), Bohdana Saliuk (Berdiansk), Oksana Panko (Uzhhorod), Natalia Hohol (Hlukhiv), Volodymyr Piven (Kramatorsk), Larysa Kutsa (Ternopil), Liliia Ovdiichuk (Rivne) and others.

Special guest of the scientific Symposium – Liudmyla Hrytsyk, Doctor of Philology, Head of Literature Theory, Comparative and Creative Literature Study Department in Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv presented the speech on the theme “Children’s literature, comparative research method”. The speaker answered questions of participants of the Conference, as she has the significant experience, the knowledge of all details of multidirectional studies and the methodology of theirs realization, also the skills of structuring scientific papers.

As always, the reports of the members of the URCCYL reflected scientific interests of the authors on the history and theory of Ukrainian and foreign literature. Thorough and concentrated report by Uliana Baran figuratively revealed the “Never-ending story” of literature for children and youth through the direction of its study in Ukraine. Scientists’ speeches have been a kind of various continuations and complements of this endless story. Because it was a question of the chronotope, archetype plots, narrative models, the typology of intertextuality, receptive aspects, change in the canons, etc in scientific reports. The object of the studies was mainly based on the texts of contemporary Ukrainian and foreign children’s fiction.

From time to time the speakers were asked questions, even there were debates. In particular, the report by Vitalina Kyzylova (in 2014 she defended her doctoral thesis on children’s literature in Kyiv, as native Luhansk was in a war zone) “How I destroyed the empire” by Zirka Menzatiuk: author’s model of historical era interpretation” was a peculiar kind of the response to the present critics (V. Vzdulska, V. Chernyshenko, I. Hryshchuk, O. Kupriian, etc.), who wrote a scathing book reviews at the time. There is the answer by Zirka Menzatiuk on the URCCYL website to young critics who “read” the text inside out. This book belongs to historical genre. Although the history of the breakup of the Soviet Empire is still breathing in the back, the one who outlived is completely united with the author. Because the events, feelings, impressions enlivened by the author in the artistic fabric of the text are fresh, spicy, absolutely truthful and realistic. Perhaps the young critics can not understand this period, because in the late 80’s they were still played with dolls and did not think about how to carry away quietly the blue and yellow ribbon to the meeting or how to make Rukh’s badges by hand as much as possible.

Thus, the report of Professor Vitalina Kyzylova is the reasoned and scientifically balanced answer to our and not our (Russian critic O. Bobrov joined to the Ukrainian ones) critics who didn’t read this historical short story well and misunderstood it, but raised a storm in a glass of water. We should be glad that (for the first time!) the book for the children of such problems and in such high level has appeared.

Throughout the Symposium Irena Kozhminska, a special guest of the Polish Institute in Kyiv, the President of the Foundation “All of Poland reads to kids” and a longtime good friend of the URCCYL members since 2013, was the interesting speaker and the attentive listener. Within the framework of the current Symposium the issue of the cooperation between Ukrainian and Polish enthusiasts in the field of forms of the implementation of the projects “All of Ukraine Reads to Kids” and “All of Poland Reads to Kids” was discussed. The most important three directions of cooperation are: the exchange of the “Golden lists of the recommended books of native and foreign literature”, the translation of the talented books of Ukrainian authors (Halyna Malyk “Criminals from a parallel world”, Volodymyr Rutkivskyi “Poterchata”, Mariana Prokhasko and Taras Prokhasko “Who will make the snow”, etc.) into Polish and vice versa – the texts of Polish writers into Ukrainian. The translation of the work by Irena Kozhminska and Elzhbeta Olshevska “Education through reading” as a kind of manuals for educators, teachers and specialists who want to implement in Ukraine this powerful and promising in terms of mass introduce children to reading project is also important.

In the resolution of the Symposium had been noted the creation of the “First book of your child” based on the book by Irena Kozhminska taking into account the national specificity and mental traits. It should be the mass publication, as is intended for children who are just born, so it is given to parents in the maternity hospital. However, without a powerful government and philanthropic support it is only a pipe dream.

A lot of essential advices and instructions to the participants of the Symposium had been received from Olha Klymenko (Polish Institute in Ukraine). Her experience in the implementation of various projects is invaluable, and the support will contribute the realization of the plan in the nearest future.

Suddenly, the geographical areas of the support of the URCCYL expanded due to the good will of the overseas guest. The wife of the Ambassador of Canada in Ukraine Oksana Smerechuk interested in the URCCYL projects and promised to assist in the sharing and distribution of the golden list of books for reading by children in Ukraine in translations and for theirs introduction by Ukrainian scientists on children’s literature for further research.

So the plan of the further actions was determined, and the one thing is left to implement it step-by-step. The next VII Symposium “Literature. Children. Time” will be in Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv. No wonder that the Symposium is called “traveling”. And its way from our spiritual and cultural capital of Lviv to Kyiv as the mental and civilized capital was long and difficult, but successful and productive. There will be a year of the intensive work. I want to wish all of us inspiration, success, realization of every idea, as well as a comprehensive assistance, financial and moral support of the major URCCYL projects by administrators and patrons.
